چکیده

We show that very low velocity droplets can be used to carry out an experiment to test whether condensate mediated transmission processes can occur in a superfluid droplet of He. By appropriately choosing the droplet radius and temperature, we can eliminate the competing roton, phonon, and ripplon mediated elastic transmission events. Then a calculation shows that if a few percent or more of the incident atoms experience anomalous condensate mediated transmission, the effects should be detectable in the droplet trajectories. We consider two forms of the experiment, involving a freely falling droplet in ambient vapor in the first instance and an oscillating droplet in a magnetic trap in the second.

On the Formation of (Anionic) Excited Helium Dimers in Helium Droplets

Metastable atomic and molecular helium anions exhibiting high-spin quartet configurations can be produced in helium droplets via electron impact. Their lifetimes allow detection in mass spectrometric experiments. Formation of atomic helium anions comprises collision-induced excitation of ground state helium and concomitant electron capture. Yet the formation of molecular helium anions in helium...

Spectroscopy of free radicals and radical containing entrance-channel complexes in superfluid helium nano-droplets

The spectroscopy of free radicals and radical containing entrance-channel complexes embedded in superfluid helium nano-droplets is reviewed. The collection of dopants inside individual droplets in the beam represents a micro-canonical ensemble, and as such each droplet may be considered an isolated cryo-reactor. The unique properties of the droplets, namely their low temperature (0.4 K) and fas...

Vortex-induced aggregation in superfluid helium droplets.

The formation of Ag nanoparticles by the addition of Ag atoms to helium droplets has been investigated. The resulting nanoparticles were then imaged by transmission electron microscopy after being deposited on a thin solid surface. In large helium droplets chains of Ag nanorods were observed similar to recently reported track-like deposits [Gomez et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2012, 108, 155302]. Ho...

Probing helium interfaces with light scattering: from fluid mechanics to statistical physics.

We have investigated the formation of helium droplets in two physical situations. In the first one, droplets are atomised from superfluid or normal liquid by a fast helium vapour flow. In the second, droplets of normal liquid are formed inside porous glasses during the process of helium condensation. The context, aims, and results of these experiments are reviewed, with focus on the specificity...

Electron impact ionization and multiphoton ionization of doped superfluid helium droplets: A comparison.

We compare characteristics of electron impact ionization (EI) and multiphoton ionization (MPI) of doped superfluid helium droplets using the same droplet source. Selected dopant ion fragments from the two ionization schemes demonstrate different dependence on the doping pressure, which could be attributed to the different ionization mechanisms. While EI directly ionizes helium atoms in a drople...
